Buying a New Cell Phone

by on Nov.24, 2008, under BlackBerry, General

My 3 year old Verizon V phone has held up very well; probably more so than any other phone I’ve ever owned.  It was, alas, time for a new one.  The V periodically didn’t like to connect, requiring a 15 second reboot, though not long, was getting annoying when trying to drive.  The car charger that I have also sucks big time, and I had to have the phone on the slightest angle in order to charge.  This is however the first time that I am replacing a phone that isn’t completely useless.  I decided about 6 months back that I wanted to upgrade to a BlackBerry.  I had wanted an iPhone but Verizon doesn’t carry them (yet?) so I figured I’d go for a BlackBerry.  I stopped into a Verizon store back then to be told of a new and upcoming BlackBerry that had a touch screen, so I decided to wait.

Last Friday, November 20th, The BlackBerry Storm was released.  I have been reading up on this phone and it’s been getting mostly mixed reviews, but as long as it charged correctly and connected my calls, I was cool with whatever.  I was planning on heading to the mall at lunch and picking one up, but when I arrived into work and saw the news that around the country people were lining up for this phone, I decided to leave at 9AM and see what I was getting myself into.  Upon arriving at the Solomon Pond Mall, I was greeted by a horrible stench like hobos had taken over the entrance.  I don’t think that this has anything to do with my story, but I thought I’d throw that in there.  As I walk closer to the Verizon store, I hear people talking, and when I show up there, about 7 people were just hanging around.  I ask who the end of the line was and was told that they were just taking names on a list.  I walk over and put my name on the list to be told that I was number 9……and they’ve got 10 phones. Yes!  I take a few laps around the

mall and come back about 15 minutes before they open to be told that the computer system has completely bogged down or stopped altogether.  After waiting another hour, I finally get to talk to somebody and get my phone.  This process takes about another 30 minutes to just check out….and the phone isn’t even activated yet!!  I get back to work around 11:30 and at about 3:30, the activation code works and my new phone is live.  It was some process

So, how do I like the phone?  So far, it’s really nice.  The touch screen takes some getting used to, but so does most every touch screen (the GPS in my car took many tries to figure out as I kept hitting the letter next to the letter I wanted!!) I have no idea what I’m doing with it, but I was able to post on twitter and read my email; both firsts for me.  I am wishing that there was (or I could find) a program that allows me to manage my contacts from my computer.  I’m also trying to figure out how to put my digital copy of Wall-E on the phone so that I can watch it on an airplane, but overall, this phone is much nicer than my old V, and fits in my pocket better!!!
