Alaska 2010 – Day 4 – Juneau

by on Jul.11, 2010, under Alaska 2010, General, Vacation

After departing Ketchikan, Royal Princess followed northwesterly courses through Clearance Strait.  At 6:30PM, we sailed through Snow Pass, renowned for its whale sightings.  Once abeam Point Colpoys we took a westerly course towards Point Baker, turned south transiting Summer Strait.  The Alaskan Pilot guided us around Cape Decision and onto northerly courses through Frederick Sound and onto Stephens Passage.  In the morning the vessel passed Marmion Island, the entrance to Gastineau Channel and into Juneau.  We expect to be all fast alongside our berth in Juneau at around 8:00AM.

I am currently waiting to hear a lecture by Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod dog sled race.  She’s onboard to give this lecture and Mom and Heather are very excited.  I’m not sure where to begin as today was just magnificent, so I’ll do what I always do and start with waking up.  This morning I slept in until 5:30AM.  Heather and I went to breakfast at 6:00AM just to learn that it didn’t start for another hour.  The Godmother of the ship, Lorraine, was sitting at the entrance to the dining room, and she was sitting by herself, so we sat with her for a while.  She’s a very positive person and tells some nice stories.  As we sat and watched the shoreline, we saw fish jumping out of the water, which was very cool.  I walked outside and photographed a few of them, but they were very far away so the photos aren’t the best.  I had the same breakfast I had a few days ago, which was again, awesome.  I then fought with the Internet for an hour before boarding a bus.  The Internet here is very unpredictable, especially when surrounded by mountains.  Our bus took us to an airfield, where we put on spiked shoes and then the four of us got into a helicopter.  Lifting off in a helicopter is something of wonder, and this one flew us up over the ice-capped mountains and snow fields, and onto the Mendenhall Glacier.  We landed onto the glacier and were taken on a small tour around the area.  We saw streams of water carving through the ice, and some people even tasted the water.  I decided not to as I’ve got a sensitive digestive system!  We took many photos and all-in-all had a wonderful time.  On the helicopter trip back I felt very blessed to have such an experience.  We were bussed back to the ship where we had a quick lunch before heading out on our second excursion.   AMAZING This time, we boarded a tiny little steam boat and took a short, hour and a half cruise in the bay learning about the history of Juneau and the gold rush times.  It was an interesting story, though the highlight for me of course was the steam engine!  After that little trip, Heather and I walked around town, looking in the shops until we passed a shop that smelled very good.  It was a fudge shop, and I told Heather that we should go in.  She said that they’d definitely have free samples, and she was right.  We had a small sample and ended up buying a few pieces of fudge with cashews and caramel.  By this time I was starting to get tired, and we still had this lecture to attend.  All-in-all this day has been the highlight of the trip so far.  It’s going to be an early night, as I’m wiped out.

Alaska 2010 – Day 3 – Ketchikan

by on Jul.11, 2010, under Alaska 2010, General, Vacation

In the early hours of the morning, Royal Princess entered Alaskan Waters.  At 4:15AM, we rounded Twin Island, shortly after we boarded our South East Alaskan pilot.  At 5:30AM, once abeam of Mountain point we started our approach to Ketchikan entering Tongass Strait.
I woke up this morning both feeling MUCH better, and at 3:21 AM.  If I wake up and see the sky becoming light, I can’t go back to sleep as I’ll just stand and watch the sky change.  This morning I tried to go up on the top deck in order to photograph but everything was still closed off due to the roughness of yesterday.  I eventually went back to our room and hung out on the balcony for a few hours as we got closer to Ketchikan.  This town is interesting. A nice way to wake up   It has a population of 14,000 in the Summer and 8,000 in the Winter.  On any given Summer day, the number of cruise passengers outnumbers the actual population, and today, there were three ships in port, ours by far the smallest.  Ketchikan has been called the “Rain Capital of Alaska” as it rains more than 300 days per year.  Today’s weather however, was perfect.  It was sunny all day and reached over 70 degrees.  We had a double tour today.  First we went to a lumberjack demonstration where two teams of lumberjacks competed in events that consisted of throwing axes, climbing tall poles, and cutting logs with chainsaws.  It was comical and a lot of fun.  After that, we boarded a bus and were driven about 12 miles to Totem Bight, which is a totem pole park.  We learned about the different totem poles and walked around a very nice (and windy) forest.  After that, we were driven back to the port where we walked around town for an hour and shopped at the local stores.  All in all, it was a wonderful, yet short port today.  Heather and I had lunch in the dining room while the ship left.  I always love sitting in there and eating while watching the nature outside.  After lunch, we napped for two hours; something I rarely get a chance to do.  After dinner we were able to see a few whales outside, and we think some Harbor Seals sitting up on a buoy.  Now we are waiting in the lounge to see the commedian tonight, and that will probably end the evening.

Alaska 2010 – Day 2 – At Sea

by on Jul.08, 2010, under Alaska 2010, General, Vacation

During the early hours of the morning, Royal Princess exited the Juan de Fuca Strait and adopted a series of north westerly headings as we paralleled the coastline of Vancouver Island.  Once abeam of Triangle Island, we will set a northerly course through the Queen Charlotte Sound.

I generally write these little blurbs up while waiting for a show or movie at night.  Tonight however, I am in the cabin because I’m having some upper GI pains and am skipping out on all entertainment for the evening.  The pain mentioned here has most likely been caused by some pasta that we had earlier.   Carbonara This was a carbonara dish which was pasta in a heavy cream and butter sauce, with Italian bacon scattered on top.  It was truly amazing and I’m glad that I ate it, but I am going to try to take it a bit easier for a few days.  Okay, so last night we got to bed around 11:00PM local time and slept very well.  This small ship rocks a lot, and we love it.  I woke up a few times during the night.  At 1:00AM it was finally dark out and I saw a bright orange crescent moon on the horizon.  At 4:00AM the sky was starting to get light again.  We got up at 5:30AM and decided to go swimming.  Now, it’s only about 50 degrees outside and the wind is very strong, so when Heather told me that she wanted to go swimming, I sighed a little bit.  We got our suits on and walked up the two floors to the pool, which was just being opened up at 6:00AM.  The pool is heated and consists of salt water, so it’s much warmer than the air.  We swam for a bit and then got into the hot tub that’s next to it.  I thought that getting out would be very cold, but the hot tub warms your body to a temperature that somehow negates the huge wind and cold temperature of the air.  For breakfast, I had pancakes, bacon (regular AND Canadian!), hash browns, and sausages.  We then just relaxed all day, got our shore excursions sorted out for the trip, and just enjoyed being at sea.  It was rather rough today, and a few of the upper decks were closed off due to high winds.  After lunch, I fought with the Internet while trying to write up and post yesterday’s entry, and then took a nap.  Tonight was formal night, and I really wish that Princess wouldn’t throw formal night at us on the second day.  We aren’t even settled in yet.  Anyways, after dinner I came back to the room for a bit, then went upstairs to the Internet cafe to see if that would help with my issues.  The Internet guy said that there were satellite issues earlier on, so I’ll try posting this from the room tomorrow after we get back on board from Ketchikan.  I think we’ll see some totem poles.

Alaska 2010 – Day 1 – Boarding

by on Jul.06, 2010, under Alaska 2010, General, Vacation

After all pre departure-checks had been satisfactorily completed, Royal Princess slipped her moorings and the Captain manoeuvred the vessel off her berth. As Royal Princess began to make headway, we entered Elliott Bay passing the vibrant waterfront of downtown Seattle. Leaving Seattle in our wake, we set a series of northerly courses as we transited firstly Puget and then Admirality Sounds. At 8:30PM in a position off Port Angeles, we slowed our speed to disembark our Sound pilot. With our pilot safely disembarked, courses were set as we entered Canadian waters and began our passage along Vancouver Island towards Ketchikan.

As I write this, I have been awake for 22 hours straight, so continuity may be at risk in this post. My day began at 3:00AM in Connecticut when I woke up and drove my family to the airport, where we boarded a plane that took us to Washington, DC and then finally to Seattle, WA. After a 45 minute bus ride, we came to our final destination: Royal Princess. This is my tenth cruise with Princess, my third to Alaska, and my second on Royal Princess. I am here with my wife Heather as well as my parents Jan and Dick. Heather and I love this ship, mostly because we find this smaller ship much more relaxing than the larger ones. Royal Princess carries about 700 passengers compared to Caribbean Princess which holds 3100 passengers.   Royal Princess - 7-5-2010 Seattle was cloudy for the first few hours, but eventually became very hot and sunny as we departed. We left an hour late because it was a US holiday and there was a shortage of longshoremen. For dinner I had some melon balls, a salad, and Prime Rib with some really awesome peapods. After dinner, we watched a comedic magician, and walked around getting stamps for the treasure hunt that they have on the first day. We won a prize in this hunt on our previous cruise, and lo-and-behold, we won a prize again this time. It’s a piece of art that we haven’t seen, and we’ll get to see the piece tomorrow. I hope it’s nice. It is now 10:30PM local time, the sky is not fully dark yet, and we’re spent. The ship is slowly rocking and I have a feeling that we’ll sleep very well tonight. We’ve got a full day at sea tomorrow, and we are looking forward to relaxing all day and hopefully unpacking our luggage.
